At the 2012 Sponsor Appreciation Breakfast held on January 18th, the Fargo Marathon Committee unveiled the official 2012 poster for the Fargo Marathon. The event was attended by a variety of marathon sponsor representatives and community dignitaries. The poster’s creator, Paul Johnson, was also in attendance.
Johnson and marathon director, Mark Knutson, discussed the origins of this year’s poster, a portion of Hebrew’s 12:1…..”Let us run with perseverance, the race that is marked out for us”, Knutson’s favorite verse. The poster contains an image of a runner crossing the finish line, and the verse is duplicated thousands of times in the background to create the image of a road behind the runner.
“This verse is what life is all about….whether you are running a marathon, running a business, being a parent or just getting through a normal day,” said Knutson. “Nobody said this was easy…we are only called to keep our eyes fixed on the finish line.”
The poster was equally meaningful for Johnson, a graphics arts instructor at Alexandria Technical College. “Running has always been a spiritual thing for me,” said Johnson. “We all run the race of life, and we are all in this to finish the race.”
February 28 marks the end of another year, but more importantly, it marks the deadline for the next fee increase for the events of the 2012 Fargo Marathon.

Fargo Marathon Sets Big Goals for 5K and Kids
During the 2012 Sponsor Appreciation Breakfast, Fargo Marathon officials announced it’s plans to set put it’s Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota 5K Run/Walk on the national running map, while putting shoes on 1,000+ kids in need.
The Fargo Marathon’s Executive Director, Mark Knutson, unveiled the organization’s plans to hit a record number (10,000 or more) of participants in the 3.1 mile event, held on the evening of Friday, May 18th. However, the goal of 10,000 people is only the beginning. The Fargo Marathon will be taking $1.00 dollar from every 5K Registration Fee and setting it in a separate fund. That fund will be matched in part by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota and the Dakota Medical Foundation….the ultimate goal being to reach $20,000 in the fund. That money will then be used to purchase Nike Pegasus shoes for children located throughout the communities of Fargo, West Fargo and Moorhead. Nike has also stepped up as a sponsor of the program.
“The Fargo Marathon is all about fitness and supporting our youth, said Knutson, so this program could not be more perfect. I hope to see this happen in 2012 and for many years to come. In 2011, we had about 6,500 people in the 5K event. All we need to have happen is for everyone from last year’s race to register for this year’s 5K and get a friend to join them….that will get us there and beyond.”
It's 3.1 Miles on a Friday Night… It’s 10,000 people… It’s 1,000 pair of shoes!
